I have Secunia PSI 2.0 (the latest one). It refuses to start the scan. What to do? psi.exe, psi_tray.exe and psia.exe are all running. Please help. I am unable to do anything.

Hello.
When you say you have the latest version....are you referring to the 3001 version ?Some users have thought they'd the most recent, and many have had problems resolved by simply upgrading. Check your version by clicking on the Secunia icon and then About.

Hello again.
You're not by some chance using IE9 Beta are you ? If so, psi is not compatible with it.
Have you checked all your settings are configured aright with the FAQ's here ? :-
http://secunia.com/products/consumer/PSI/faq/#s3
Might it be worth looking to verify that your firewall is set to allow Secunia ?
If after checking the foregoing it still does not work, you might try re-installing from here :- ftp://ftp.secunia.com/PSISetup.exe psi 2.0 Full Version
Please clear out temp. files/browser cache before doing so. Reboot after install, before trying a full scan.
Hope this helps.......regards,

It does not matter if U are using IE9 BETA or IE9 RC. They both work flawlessly. The only difference is the BETA version will not display the graphics which has nothing to do with your problem.

Try a reinstall from here:

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

Click the download link & allow PSI to "do its thing".

Note any error messages during the procedure.

I might have a solution, I got it from support but it worked for me,
it is a bit comlex so you need to be careful so you get it right if you have problemslet me know and if it solved your problem let us know: here goes,
first you need to go to the command prompt (click start then type cmd in the search window, then type or copy and paste paste it with a right click IN the blackbox exactly as it is typed: Mark and copy the next line:
cd "c:\Program Files (x86)\Secunia\PSI"

then right click inside the black box and choose "Paste"

ok after you have done that type and again exactly as it is here:

Psia -r and then hit enter

then type:
Psia -i and hit enter again

ok now,

Then there should come up a box that asks for your password, type in the
password and hit enter - please be aware that you can't see that you type
anything and that this wont work if you have an empty password.

please note this is a user account password that you use.
then close that out and open secunia and see if it is scanning if not try it again and see if it works

I use IE9 RC too....but it's not my default browser....you've been a user since 2009....what were you using before ? A switch back may not do any harm....it may jar something into action....I'm just suggesting what I might try in your situation.
Have you run CHKDSK recently to verify consistancy of the disk....check for orphaned files/indexes so on and so forth ? I run the Memory Diagnostics Tool once a month too.
Do you use a registry scanner....the one in CCleaner at least ?
Meticulously checked your settings in the FAQ's....can you please confirm ?
Other than that, I'm stumped/at a loss for anything else to suggest....I think it's about time we had some input from Support.

@mogs
Not sure what Secunia Support can do. Their programme is working. This is an end user issue.

@pratnala2010

When U say it still does not work what have U tried?

Have U completed a reinstall?

Have U tried the solution from Secunia Support outlined to U via the post from @refishman567.

***Please refer to this thread OFFICIAL from Secunia PSI Official:

For our info. Did you do a clean install, or did you let the installer do the work, installing over the previous version of PSI?

That solution has already been rendered by @refishman567.

If he has done as requested then he should have done a reinstall over the top of the old.

We are trying to find out how far he has got with the other 3 possible solutions.

EDIT:

U should now look at this thread which is a Secunia Support response.

I had the same problem with the scan not starting, and eventually found that the PSI Agent Service could not start because the specified file (PSIA.EXE) could not be found. On checking the C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI folder, that module was not there. A check with a backup found that SUA.EXE, the automatic updates module, was also missing. After I copied these modules from the backup and restarted the PSI, it was all OK and the scan ran successfully.

Why did those modules go missing? It is suggested earlier that the new IE9 RC may have something to do with the problem. I am not using IE9, but had just installed Firefox 4 RC1, and am wondering if there is something in these new browsers? The PSI was OK before I installed the Firefox 4 RC1.

No - See this:

U will note in particular that the number of programmes scanned is limited.

I don't know if there is a correlation between this or not but thought I would throw it out here, are you using firefox 3.6.15 by any chance? there is a java problem with the 6 24 update ( can't remember build) that has been causing me problems with another program and it might be causing this problem as well anyway check with java.com and see if there are any conflicts with that,
might be a wild shot but it might be the problem.

I am using Secunia PSI right from version 0.4. Can you elaborate on the registry scanner? How do I do that? And also, how to run CHKDSK?

@pratnala2010 Hello.
Glad to read that you did manage to get psi up and running.
Some people don't like using Registry Scanners....but have less opposition to the one found within CCleaner....if you don't already use it, you can download/read more here :-
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner. Personally, I use the Auslogics scanner....have done for about two years, without any problems. You can read more about it and download the free version from here :-
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-clea...
On a different theme, tho' concerned with maintenance/performance : here's a very useful tool I've come to depend on.....a defragmenter with many useful features including boot-time defrag....it keeps the pc at optimum performance. You can read/download the free version from here :-

Full description/details....
Download...Free or Trial version....http://www.puransoftware.com/Puran-Defrag-Download...

Hope you find it useful....

To run CHKDSK.....I think it is very much the same with Windows 7.....
Start/Computer....choose disc you wish to check. See Properties with a red check alongside....click on that, and another panel should appear....click the Tools option, and then Error Checking. You can then check now or later.
Hope this helps........

What else do I need to for regular computer maintenance? I currently do a Disk Defrag and Virus Scan every month. Apart from that, what should I do?

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Clean Up then

tick (check mark) all the boxes of the items U want to clean

Open Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options> under various tabs U will see various items U can clear down

If U use JAVA U can clearout the cache.

CLEARING & ADJUSTING THE JAVA CACHE TO IMPROVE BROWSER SPEED

Works On All Windows Platforms.

The Java Control Panel applet allows for the clearance of Java's temporary Internet cache and reset the default cache size to a more reasonable level.

Clearing The Cache.

1. Go to Start>Control Panel>Click on the JAVA Icon.

2.It will open displaying the GENERAL Tab. Look to the bottom & click on SETTINGS for the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES.

3. This will open TEMPORARY FILES SETTINGS. Look to the bottom & click on DELETE FILES. A box with two ticks (check marks) will appear - Click OK (The clearance could take some time)- the box will disappear once cleaning is complete.

Pictorials are here if required for identification:
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache....

4. Immediately above the Delete Files button is a SLIDER. Move that to reduce the future cache amount between 100-200MB as opposed to the default of 1000MB.

5. Click APPLY.
