I have now. However, I could not find anything particularly helpful there. I downloaded the KB2481109 install file to my "Downloads" folder in my main computer (XP Pro) and ran it from there, but it made no difference.

Following is a copy of the latest entry in C:\Windows\KB2481109.log, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Does this help?

It looks like the failure is due to error code 0xe0000102

Fair bit about that on the web - have a look by inserting 0xe0000102

into the web search box.

Have you tried uninstalling KB956744 as described in the known issues in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2481109 ?

I saw that known issue when I read KB2481109 on the M/S web site. However, when I first looked through the many installed XP updates in Add or Remove Programs (not in numerical order) I missed KB956744.

With a more careful search today I found it on both my recalcitrant computers. After uninstalling it, KB2481109 is now installed OK.

Many thanks to both of you for your help.
