HI ALL
my PSI 2.0 show's a red instead of green symbol meaning something is to fix, but i cannot even do a manual scan, the last one is over due (may 13th). does it have to do with G-DATA??? because befor i had AVIRA and everything worked fine.

Irene,
Do you have G-Data anti virus only or their Internet Security Suite which includes a firewall?

I suspect the latter - if so have you checked to see if it is blocking Secunia?

Greetings
I do not think you need to reinstall anything. I do not know G DATA therefore cannot advise you where to look. Somewhere in the OPTIONS will be the ability to check whether Secunia has been blocked until you give it authority to scan your PC.

Leave this thread open & let us know how you get on.

It may not be the firewall in which case others may help you find a solution.

Hello Irene,

found a solution in a GDATA forum. It's not a GDATA problem, but PSI!
They created a Backup File in directory .../secunia/psi and moved the log files
(...log.txt) there. Because they were very big.
Have done the same, afterwards the scan worked as initially.

In Deutsch:
Offensichtlich sind die ...log.txt-Dateien im Programmverzeichnis zu groß geworden.
Deshalb in einen neuen Ordner gebaut und die log.txt-Dateien dorthin verschoben. Danach lief's wieder wie geschmiert.

Hi all!

This discussion is very interesting to me, because I have the same problem with G-Data and Secunia PSI.

The issue startet after installation of G-Data Version 2012, the previous G-Data version did not interfere with Secunia.

It seems not to have to do with the firewall module. Inactivated firewall makes no difference. Inactivating the antivirus guard has set the Secunia PSI scan free to start.

The G-Data service advised me to change a setting of the antivirus guard.

In the settings of the antivirus guard, advanced settings, there you find an issue "Module", where you can choose "scan reading and writing processes" or "scan only executing processes".

If you change to only survey executing processes, the Secinia PSI scan works again.

But I do want to use the other option, so I'm not content with the advise of G-Data.

Kind regards, csi

I contacted their support and there are two ways to solve the issue:

Accessing PSI’s log file psialog.txt located at .... \Secunia\PSI causes the problem.
You can define a file-scanning exception only for this log file: Settings > AntiVirus > Monitor > Exceptions > New

Also the workaround described by the user “NocheinEngel” should solve this issue.

Hi to everybody, hi Irene!

It's very hard to obtain a clear explanation of the functioning of an antivirus engine! The information I achieved about GData and macro viruses and exploits is not complete yet. Some preliminary findings:

In the GData user forum, they suggest that it should be a problem caused by poor programming of Secunia PSI. They proposed to move the Secunia PSI log files away. Both of this is not very helpful. The problem of blocking Secunia PSI occurred the first time, when I had updated GData from version 2011 to version 2012.

After much watching I found that Secunia PSI is not blocked completely, but decelerated extremely. After a long time, the PSI scan suddenly starts. It needs several hours to complete. Explored with the GData monitor program MonActivityCS, there is only shown how often a process was scanned. Noticeable are some files which are scanned two to eight times: datastore.edb, tmp.edb, edb.chk, edb.log, ntuser.dat.log, ntuser.dat. The above mentioned psialog.txt (61 KB) or psialog.txt2 (2.049 KB) file didn't occur in the GData monitor program at all. When I defined it within the exceptions of GData, it didn't make a difference.

The GData support had advised me to change the antivirus guard mode from checking every harddisk action to only checking files when executed, which I didn't appreciate first. After some questions and responses, it seems to me that this is a good workaround yet. Although I'm still not completely conscious about how it is defined, when GData says "scan only when executing", I think this setting is not a security risk.

The matter was, if GData's antivirus guard would still sense, when a macro virus or an exploit would start. The GData service explained to me that it would. The difference is that the guard does not recognize any more malware when just opening a folder or when copying files. But any code executed will be antivirus scanned.

I still hope that Secunia and GData would search for the reason of the issue, but this workaround is ok, assumed that the guard alarms when a macro virus should ever be starting ...

Thank you.

cs-i

Today, GData's Service asked me to still try one time, what would happen, when I removed the Secunia PSI log files.

Funny to say, the Secunia PSI worked unimpairedly with the GData setting of the antivirus guard scanning on every harddisk action.

Funny, because the exception list didn't help with the problem, and the MonActivityCS didn't show any of the secunia log files.

Still I'm a little bit unsure about the recommended GData setting of scanning only execution of files. But they assured me three times, that this way of handling my computer security is sufficient, especially, when I do perform scans of the whole computer all two or five days.

And, still I'm very curious about what GData or Secunia would find as a reason for this phenomenon.

My PSI 2.0 is not working and showing red? Tried to run scan no luck running. Spent an hour on the Phone with a friend and still getting no where. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

Hi!

I'm not an expert, so it would be very helpful if you would describe more detailed, what you are doing and what is happening with Secunia PSI. Please begin with your operating system.

Hi Irene,

didn't any of the above hints help you?
Have you already tried to change the G-Data settings?

(Hat Dir keiner der bisherigen Tipps geholfen?
Hast Du es schon mit geänderten G-Data-Einstellungen versucht?
Mir half, den Viren-Wächter auf "Nur beim Ausführen prüfen" zu stellen.)

Kind regards, csi
