I'm new to Secunia Psi and I'm about to install the newest version (1.0.0.2).
I would like to know if I should remove the prior version first? |

I managed to install new version and removed the old version afterwards
You simply install a new version - rightclick on the icon you had - the old version will be cancelled - copy a new icon from your new program to your desk

But won't the new one be installed in the same location? If that proves to be the case, how would I be able to seperate the two? |

The psi will automatically complain if you already have a version on your pc - ask you to close it (if it is running) and ask you to uninstall the old version, before the new one will get installed.
But don't worry, if you need to do something the psi will tell you. Just go a head and install it ;-)

I have a similar but different problem. I am also asked by the PSI installation program to manually uninstall the previous version but I am unable to locate one. I have used Search but to no avail. Where does PSI install itself? In the System/Software directory there is no entry for PSI, Secunia, etc. Please help if possible. Thanks. |

XP-user: start - configsys - doubleclick Software - select the program you want to get rid of - Delete
Vista-user: start - configsys - select Delete under Programs - leftclick on the program you want to delete
Not difficult at all - be careful not to delete a program you did not want to

Thanks for the update. |

The advice sounds good but a couple of the respondents here, myself included, have already said that the PSI is not in the "configsys/software" folder!! I have used "search" but am unable to find anything that I can associate with either Secunia or PSI. The PSI install program will not go any further once it advises that not all files of the earlier version can be removed by the installation program. I am to remove them manually and re-try the installation. A very vicious circle. Please provide a practical solution. Thanks again. |

Don't worry! You'll find out. As for me I am using Vista. After a rightclick on the Icon Icon as well as programs were deleted automatically. After that I copied a new icon on my desk. Not every machine might work in the same way and can depend on the programs you are using. I'm sure you can choose the entrance to the program to delete and/or change programs. On my screen I click on "Configuratiescherm" - "Programma's" - "Programma's en onderdelen"
I do not know how to translate. Someone else might be helpful in this.
Kind regards,
Philip |

Robertolara1,
What do you want exactly - more details or translation? I don't see any response. If you did not succeed to solve your problem, let me know what you are using - Vista of XP and I'll try to write what you can do, provided that I understand what your problem is.

OK, I am using XP Pro, SP3. The precise problem is that the PSI installation packet tries unsuccessfully to de-install the earlier version. It apparently gets rid of most files but not all and advises me to remove them manually and run the install program again. I go to configsys/software but there is nothing there to indicate PSI or Secunia. Therefore the advice given earlier does not apply. You cannot click on a non-existent entry! I tried using Search but also do not find anything indicating the Secunia PSI program. This all means I am only able to use the very basic Secunia search program which does not do a sufficient job. I hope this explanation is thorough enough to clarify the problem. I look forward to a solution. Many, many thanks!!! |

Sambabiar,
If you still have a Secunia-icon on your desk, rightclick and maybe you can delete all. If not: Leftclick on the green block (Start) and do not tell me you are colour-blind. Then you should see several programs. Look for a round picture with red, green, blue and yellow. Leftclick on this icon. After that you'll see a screen SOFTWARE. At left upside you leftclick and many programs will appear. Scroll to the program you want to delete. Leftclick on the name of this program. At the right side of the name you'll see a blue block. Leftclick on this block and the program should be gone. Go to PSI and copy an icon to you desk.
If you don't feel certain, first of all make a full back-up. When you meet a problem, you delete Secunia and PSI and install PSI from the beginning.
Could be Double Dutch, I suppose you are clever enough to do this and correct where I might have made a mistake. Sincerly yours, Philip |

First, I am not color blind. Secondly, I am very familiar with where you have been trying to lead me. I use that list regularly to uninstall programs. You have apparently not understood what I have said in each of my responses - there is NO Secunia OR PSI listed there, nor anything even resembling the program. A couple of hours ago I did a search of my Register and found several related files, which I deleted. I restarted my system. All seems to be functioning well. I tried again to install the latest version of PSI. Same message: Some files are still somewhere on my system and I need to remove them manually. My problem and my question remain - HOW and WHERE do I locate these files? This is becoming very frustrating. I have never experienced this with any other program, and PSI is a program I very much want to use. I appreciate any practical assistance you are able to provide. Thank you!!

Sam,
First of all my apology for underestimation your experience. But how could I know? Things I fear: an angry woman and a sad woman (sad one most). Maybe I am making situation worse, but I try.
Did you search for the program Installshield or Wise Installer? I found screens Remove Shared Component - Remove Programs from your computer - Details (with Register keys you could delete)
Sometimes on the software screen there is a link to Support Info. This link should be underlined. Unfortunately not always available.
Do not desperate, please. In time you'll find a solution. I'll keep on looking how to help you (as a word of comfort - not only a word)
Last option could be: Reset your system to the original situation and restore the programs you need.
Kind regards,
Philip |

Thanks. There were some good tips there. I will check them out and inform you of the results. I hope I am not reduced to following that list tip though. I went through that "housecleaning" exercise a few months ago. System runs great but it is a time-consuming affair. Thanks again.

Sam,
I think I know what is happening.
Some programs, upon installation of a newer version, or update, will tell you that it is deleting the older version. However, for some unknown and unexplainable reason, not all files from the older version are deleted.
The program will give you a notice that these files should be manually deleted.
But the program will not be recognized by windows as the main executable has been deleted.
To find them, I click on the "My Computer" icon, which will open up "Windows Explorer".
I then click "C:\" drive ( or whichever one has Windows installed on it), to display the folders on this drive, go down to "Program Files", click on it, then go down to "Secunia" and then "PSI" and there you should find your left over files.
A word of caution....I had to delete PSI and re-install it a while back. Make sure you write down and remember your profile information so you can recover it after the new install.
I didn't and had to create a new profile. My bad.
At least this is what I think is happening to you.....good luck and let us know if you have success.
Merry Christmas to ALL and to ALL a good nite. :)))

Sam,
What might be useful: Go to page nr 7 on this site - select the thread
How to uninstall. In this thread YoKenny refers to an extensive link.
The author is GZeilstra. Cannot help author is Dutch but I think you can find some hints.
Did you check other links about this subject?

I experienced this problem too. Despite removing all visible entries for Secunia, the message requiring a manual uninstall continually reappeared. Eventually, using Regedit, I searched my registry using the simple search term 'Secunia' and deleted every registry entry under the reference 'Secunia' - this included an entry for 'Secunia PSI (RC4)'. I was then able to install the new upgrade of version 1.0.0.3.
Why did not the uninstall work in the first place?. I believe that during the original installation of v.1.0.0.1, the software failed to register a valid value in the registry. Subsequently, a registry scan by "Registry Mechanic" highlighted this invalid registry value and deleted it. Without the correct uninstall registry entry, no wonder the program fails to uninstall.
Of course I lost my Secunia profile in the process and had to make a new one, but only a little problem in the great scheme of things. |

I just tested installing 1.0.3 over 1.0.1 and it worked flawlessly on my test XP computer. It even preserved my settings etc. I did let the program uninstall the previous version. I never had any release candidates installed.

OK, I have the same problem. It says "you have to delete another version". You say Start - configsys - doubleclick Software and etc. What or where is -- configsys? I checked the Preograms and SP1 or Secunia was not there. i have XP. I have the program installe don my laptop and it works fine. Also do not have a logo on the desktop. Love the program, but as others have said, if you can't find it, you can't use it. Ran Search with -- Secunia, PSI, PSI1 and all kind of variations. Still cannot find what I am supposed to delete. |

I have the same problem installing PSI But I have gone through the registry, and intensive search of every file on this PC. The last working copy was RC3. I have sent the screen shots to Secunia of all the messages I get when trying to install(like you stated). I have the new version running on my Grand Children computer also quite a few of my friends, but not mine.

I have this problem on one of my computers (WIN XP SP3). Secunia support gave me this instruction, which works perfectly for me. My other computers (same OS) don't have the problem. Use this only if you have uninstalled PSI, but still get the message that the program was unable to completely uninstall the existing program.
Using the Command prompt (START, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt), change to the directory where the downloaded PSI Setup program was saved. Then enter "PSIsetup_SkipUninstall" with a space where I show the underscore character. The PSI Installer then installs correctly.
Keep the instructions somewhere, because the problem doesn't seem to go away on this one computer, so I need to do this each time I update. I don't know what piece of the program seems to be "stuck". |

Glad it worked. The glitch on my computer came when I moved from RC3 to RC4, also. So - until this fix, my last working version was RC3. |

I suspect that the glitch only affects those who had installed one of the RC versions.
When I beta test software, I always uninstall first before updating. Too many residual side effects.

I did an uninstall of RC 3 before I attempted the update and still got the error (glitch)call it whatever you want. But from the very beginning I had absolutely no problems. That is until I tried to go from RC3 to RC4. Then all heck went wrong. I'm just glad I finally got a work around so I can use it again.♠ |

If you attempt to over-install, it should delete the previous version and preserve your settings.
What is the version of your current version?

Download the file (PSIsetup.exe) and note where it is saved on your computer. For consistency, I download setup files to the Desktop.
Open the Command Prompt. Once you open the Command prompt, you are operating as if in the old DOS mode.
The black Command prompt box will show a line like this:
c:\Documents and Settings\YourName>
STEP 1: Immediately after the ">" character, Type cd\ and touch RETURN (think "Change Directory"). My entry would look like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe>cd\
That will take you to the root directory of drive "C:". The screen will look like this:
C:\>
STEP 2: Type cd\, followed by the full directory name where you saved the downloaded file. Because I save to the desktop, my entry would look like this:
C:\>cd\Documents and Settings\Joe\Desktop
The Command prompt box will show a line that looks like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Desktop>
After the">" character, type in PSIsetup.exe_SkipUninstall and touch RETURN (NOTE: use a space where the underscore character is.) That should start the installation without the uninstall step. |

Thanks for your prompt reply, but unfortunetly I still can't get it to work.
When I put in PSIsetup.exe Skipuninstall and click return I get the following message:
PSIsetup.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
I have Windows XP Pro with SP3 if thats any help. I usually dowmload

If the downloaded setup file, PSIsetup.exe is not in the directory you set in the Command Prompt box (STEP 2), you will get that message when you try to run the file in the last step. My entries were given as an example.
Search for the setup file, PSIsetup.exe. Note the full file path (Directory and all sub-directories). Change your input in STEP 2 so that you are in that sub-directory before you type in PSIsetup.exe_SkipUninstall.
Your entry might look something like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Documents
but must be where the setup file is located.
Good Luck! |

Let me tell you I am a not-experienced PC-user, working with XP-home and Vista-home basic. I met no problems on installing, upgrading and deleting files. Do not be surprised on using a safe base and your machine will report a failure. F.i. a strong Antivirus-program will not always simply accept installation. A fine program to protect against loosing files may give problems on deleting files you do not need or want. Two good programs might conflict.
To solve any problem do not look at the solution a user of Vista-prof has if you are working with XP-home. It could be wise to state your system and can be helpful for other people.
Merry Xmas and a happy new year. For a special contact I add:
many happy years after this one.
