An end-of-life patch is needed for ABBYY FineReader 6.x. Is this patch needed or can I safely ignore it?

Hi

The vendor does no longer provide patches or support for Abby FineReader 6.x

If you need the program, it is recommended that you upgrade to the latest version which should be Abby FineReader 10.x, which will most likely not be free.

If you do not need the program, you could also remove it from it from your system.

It's an optical character recognition program. It takes a scanned image and converts it to a text file. It is often included in the software installed when setting up an All-in-one printer/scanner/copier.

It looks as if you've never used it.

There have never been any vulnerabilities reported for it and it's not an obvious target for malware. You could install EMET and add it to its protected applications to make it harder to exploit.

Just got off the phone with Abbyy Fine Reader Tech Support (USA 1-408-457-9777). They said they had numerous inquiries regarding this and asked if it is because of Secunia?. The answer was yes. Abbyy advised they have not stopped supporting 6.x and don't understand why Secunia reported End of Life on 6.x. Advised to ignore Secunia information. How do I do that to get back to 100%?. Please advise.

Click the + next to the entry in Scan Results, then click the folder icon with the red circle on it.
Or you could wait to see if Secunia respond to your information.

Hi

We've contacted Abby in order to clarify which versions of their products they still support with security patches.

We will update our rules accordingly as soon as possible.

Thank you for sharing this information with us.

Hi again

I've just received a response from ABBYY Support, and they provided us with this link:
http://abbyy.com/support/allproducts

According to ABBYY Support, all programs on the list is still supported.

Users with software no longer supported should be interesting in the quote below:
"Versions of ABBYY software not listed are no longer supported and can be upgraded by the customer’s request according to the product upgrade policy."

As far as I can tell, the ABBYY FineReader 6.x is no longer supported and users should upgrade to a newer (and supported) version.

There might be an issue with the detection of this version of ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6.x vs the Regular ABBY FineReader 6.x

As you can see from the path, the program claims to be the "Sprint" version, however nothing in the fileinformation confirms this.

Could users with the ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6.x confirm that there is a Sprint.exe file in the installation folder?

I've got ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6.0. It came with a Lexmark printer. According to their website, it is still supported. PSI detects both Abbyy FineReader Sprint 6.0 (patched) and Abbyy FineReader 6.x (End of LIfe)

I've been dealing with this by ignoring the End-of-Life folder.

Thanks for the information, that was fast!

I've updated our detection rules slightly, could I ask you to perform a full scan and see if the issue has been resolved?
