PSI is slow to start up and scan. it took me about 3 to 4 mins to start up and scan. it doesn't keep programs up to date, but scanning security updates is okay.

FileHippo Update Checker is way better. it took me less than 30 secs from start up and scan. it doesn't scan security updates like PSI, but it find more up to date programs than PSI.

Secunia PSI is a vulnerability checker. It is not interested in programmes that are merely updated by vendors for cosmetic reasons, bug fixes or programmes in BETA.

On that basis programmes like Filehippo & CNet Tracker will, on many occasions, have more up to date versions on offer.

By the same token, Filehippo & the like are just third party update links. They have no way of informing a user that a vulnerable programme is installed on a PC or indeed if the programme on offer for download is vulnerable.

Filehippo also has flaws. Its very limited database mainly caters for "freebie" programme users which by default exclude those who purchase professional programmes.

Many Forum members use both programmes as they compliment each other by having a different aim.

Scan times will be different. PSI completes 7 stages which includes linking to Windows Update to complete a full security audit. U do not say what the makeup of your system is.

My benchmark figure for a full scan is a maximum of 30 seconds (normally about 18/20 seconds but is slowed on occasions by the Windows Update phase)

I use both. Secunia loads instantly under normal circumstances and scans regularly complete in under a minute.

As noted by @ Maurice: "Many Forum members use both programmes as they compliment each other by having a different aim"

Hello everybody,

A few years ago, I searched deeply for a good program to watch this entire updates matter. I'm of course running PSI but this is not his first goal.

So I believe I tried all the "serious" ones, there are not so many out there really, and finally came across SUMo (Software Updates Monitor) by KC Softwares.
I also red a fair amount of positive reviews about it.

Well, I honestly must say that it really is the best "updates watcher" I ever installed. Absolutely outstanding and free !
Another good and important point too : their support is very reactive and effective.

And no : I'm not working with / for them ... ;-)
I'm just recommending a fine software as I did it already many times with PSI, which is certainly a software that is a "must be" on a well kept machine.

Enjoy the weekend !
