I don't have any version of Reader in the ADD/REMOVE but I have in my program files and elsewhere I'd presume Adobe Reader 10.0 and Acrobat 7.0 along with Flash Player and Shockwave.
I have many instances of Acrobat, Reader, Air, Arm under Docs and Settings in All Users and also in two other places under my name and my wifes.
I've used Revo uninstaller and reader and acrobat doesn't show up.
When i try to download reader i get ERROR Message 1326.
I've researched it on the Adobe site...no help.
Can anyone tell me how to rid myself of the instances amd reg entires in the hoopes i won't have to reinstall XP SP3.
Thanks a lot.

What path is PSI showing U for each item that is vulnerable?

FINDING A FILE PATH

From the DASHBOARD page click on SCAN RESULTS.

1. This will list all your programmes with a + to the left of each one.
2. Click the + sign next to the item that U want help with.
3. This will reveal the path under DETECTED INSTANCES.
4. Highlight it then copy (CTRL+C) then paste (CTRL+V)) that path back to the Forum.
OR THIS METHOD WHICH GIVES A HELPER MORE INFORMATION
4a Below DETECTED INSTANCES you will see You can double click this row for additional information & options>double click it>a box will appear>click TROUBLESHOOT REPORT>Now highlight the information revealed from START to END & copy it (CTRL+C) then post it to the Forum (CTRL+V)

The end result U post to the Forum should look like this:

Before I do that I wanted to say that when I try to open Adobe PDF on my desktop, or in fact anywhere on my computer I get this error message..."Windows can't access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to use them."
Is that the same problem that you have responded to in my earlier post? I might also say that this all started when I used Secunia to update reader 10X.
Thanks.

Looks like U require a complete Adobe sort out. Windows works perfectly without any of the dreaded Adobe programmes so there is no way U will need to reinstall Windows.

Look at the PSI list of programmes - what Adobe products have U got?

Adobe Reader? Adobe Air? Adobe Shockwave? Adobe Flash? A download Manager from NOS?

Once I know that I can advise further.

The PSI shows:
Adobe Flash Player 10X (active X)
" " " " (NPAPI)
ADOBE GETPLUS DLM x 1.62.103
SHOCKWAVE PLAYER 11.6.0.626 (active x)
" " " " " " (NPAPI)

Then I have on my C drive under ALL USERS App. data
Adobe AIR (empty folder)
ARM (empty folder)
READER 8.2 (empty folder)
SETUP (has items)
UPDATE 5 (empty folder)

under BOB App. data
Adobe
Acrobat 6 (1k)
AIR (empty)
FLASH PLAYER (items)
ESD (empty)
SHOCKWAVE (items)
ADOBE VM

under MARIE App. data

ACROBAT 7.0
Bin and Lst files

And finally in my PROGRAM FILES
ADOBE ACROBAT 7.0 (ENU)
SETUP 8.2, WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE (two instances) 7.09 is one of them.

READER FOLDER 10.0
AIR, BROWSER, PLUGINS, MULTIMEDIA, PLUGINS 3D, SPP PLUGINS

That's all of it not including Common Files and God knows how many registry entries.
Hope you can help, Thanks.

Bobalu,
Looks like a complete can of worms. I assume all these items are from free versions of Adobe Products? It could take a bit of effort to rid your PC of the dross. As a confidence booster Windows is NOT reliant on any products to work therefore it is perfectly save to remove them. When we have finished cleaning up I will give U the links to re-establish the Adobe products U want for the future.

1. Go to Control Panel>add/remove & uninstall as many Adobe items as possible EXCEPT Adobe Flash & Shockwave. This includes the totally useless Adobe DLM which may display as NOS.

To uninstall FLASH & SHOCKWAVE use these tools:

a. To uninstall Flash use this tool:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

b. To uninstall Shockwave use this:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14224.html

SAVE both these uninstallers to DESKTOP &, before using them, make absolutely sure U have completely shut down (use the Task Manager if necessary to COMPLETELY EXIT these processes if running):
a. All Browsers.
b. Windows Messenger.
c. Incredimail.
d. All Adobe Products.
e. PSI - Unless using version 2

Now activate the uninstallers.

Now navigate back to the areas U highlighted as having Adobe empty folders. Right click & delete all those empty folders & any other Adobe dross U find but please be sure they are clearly Adobe items.

Now run a full PC scan. Does it show any items as vulnerable? If so please publish the details using the method I have outlined in my post above.

bobalu,
This is Stage 2. Please ensure U have completed all the actions in my post above before checking the Registry.

CLEARING UP LEFTOVERS FROM AN UNINSTALL USING THE REGISTRY

IT IS IMPORTANT U FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER. TINKERING IN THE REGISTRY BEYOND THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BELOW AND GETTING IT WRONG CAN,IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, CAUSE A SEVERE LOSS OF HUMOUR AFTER A RESTART AND WINDOWS REFUSES TO BOOT! IT IS WRITTEN FOR A COMPLETE NOVICE USER.

1. Opening REGEDIT

Go to Start>Run>in the box that appears type regedit>click OK on the box>U are now in the Registry.

2. Finding the correct key to modify

a.Look in the LEFT pane for the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER>expand the key by clicking on the arrow to the left.

c.Look for SOFTWARE>expand that key by clicking the arrow. All the programmes installed (and no doubt many more U thought U had uninstalled) on the PC are exposed.

LEFT click on any Adobe folders. When U click on any key it is normal that the "nitty gritty" elements of that folder are exposed in the right hand pane for U to double check that is the programme U wish to remove.
Once satisfied U have found the data RIGHT click the folder in the LEFT pane & delete.

Now navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>expand to SOFTWARE & repeat the procedure U have just done.

U should not be alarmed if some programmes are in one HKEY & not in the other.

If happy, exit the registry by clicking the red X (top right).

Reboot. Now run another full PSI scan. Is everything in order?

Maurice,
I've hit a bump in the road. I followed your dirctions and used Add/Remove to delete everything but Flash and Shockwave which I deleted succesfuly. The I deleted the empty folders in app data. When I got to program Files I deleted all I could but was unable to delete some items. I got these error messages depending on which folder was left and I tried to delete.
Can't delete Access denied:
ADlite.dll
Admplugin.dll
NPPDF32.dll
A3DUTILs.dll
So I restored the deleted files from the recycle bin. In PROGRAM FILES, the ADOBE folder has...ACROBAT 7.0 setup files. In that is RDRbig 709 and in the ENU folder is 8 items. Among them are Setup.Exe and Adobe reader7.09 Windows Installer package.
Then another FOLDER: READER 10.0 with a subfolder that says READER. It has 5 subfolders. Amoung them AIR, BROWSER and three more that contain Plugins.

I ran Secunia and the only vulnerability was APPLE I tunes.

What do I do now? Thanxs

Sadly Windows XP does not have a nice tool like Snippet to take a cutting.

Are U suggesting that when U look in the left column U can see an Adobe entry in the Software section?

Adobe ARM
with two subfolders
Adobe Synchronizer
w/ five subfolders
COMMON Files
w/three subfolders

UNDER HKey Local Machine
ADOBE Folder:

Adobe ARM
COMMON FILES
DLM
PDF OWNER
sub folder> Previous Owner
that has MANY sub folders.

I would expect that - for a moment I thought U meant U had more than one Adobe main folder in the left side.

Using my Registry guide post navigate back & remove (delete) both those Adobe main folders. It will take that dross with it.

Reboot.

Now run a full PSI scan - is it still clear?

Now check the registry again - has all Adobe gone?

Maurice,
Did everything you said...got rid of all instances of adobe in registry and down loaded Reader 10 again. It wouldn't install. Got ERROR: 1326, getting security file C/Program Files/ Adobe reader/Reader 10.0/ONIX32.DLL - Get lost error.
Strange because I now have the reader 10 and all it's other junk in Program Files.
Is this a hopeless case?

No it is not.

1. Please confirm all Adobe dross has been removed & the PSI scan is 100%.

2. Are any new Adobe items showing in Control Panel>add/remove?

3. Is there a particular reason U want the dreaded Adobe Reader installed - there are many more out there that do the same job but far less hassle & nothing like the security issues Adobe have?

Edit: Very late here so off to bed. The object of the exercise is to remove all Adobe dross before attempting any reinstalls. If Adobe 10 is not in Control Panel>add/remove then navigate back to here & delete this file & the rest of the dross U are talking about

C/Program Files/ Adobe reader/Reader 10.0/ONIX32.DLL

Once U tell me there is nothing showing in the Registry or Control Panel>add/remove or in Windows Explorer & that PSI has given U a 100% score I will give U safe download links to all the programmes we have removed so U can pick & choose what U want for the future.

I reinstalled Shockwave and Flash again because I had to for other apps. However before that I ran PSI and add/remove and checked the registry and there were no instances of Reader.
I have Adobe reader along with all those DLL's that get the error messages in the program folder of Reader. I also have some dll's in my Windows cache folder and Prefetch.
I don't get it. Adobe reader can't be uninstalled? Yet it's there in my programs? What kind of crappy program did Adobe make for 10? It's incredible to me.

I agree. For that reason & their security record I will not have any Adobe free products on my PC except Flash.

Pleased to hear two items are back on OK.

Can U not delete all the old Adobe Reader manually as already discussed?

Is PSI showing 100% secure? What do U think about migrating away from Adobe Reader?

I already have. I use Nitro now. And no, I cannot manually delete the adobe reader folder in Program Files. It won't allow me. And yes, PSI shows no instance of Reader.
Unfortunatley Adobe has a terrible support site so I don't beleive I'll get any help there. I thank you for your valiant effort in trying to help me rid myself of this junk program.
Best,
Bob

Please U are all fixed.
All PC's have old dross on them of one kind or another. Provided PSI is giving U a clean bill of health & the PC is running OK they are best left alone.

Hello Maurice ,

As you say the remaining dross is just that , but in case Bob wants to fully clean up , I noticed a mention of "previous owners" in an earlier post ; could it be that he needs to take possession of the files or would something like "move on boot" or "unlocker" work ??

Anthony

Anthony - thanks was just about to edit my post with a Clean Up Utility.

Bob,
Had a thought that U might like to try in slower time. Download this:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-clean...

When run it will produce a list of programmes - if it lists the Reader delete. U can keep the Clean Up programme but just be aware that Microsoft have withdrawn support due to Office conflicts. Although listed, under no circumstances, should this programme be used to remove Microsoft Office.
